‘Don Elías’

Photographic portrait of Elias Rogent, A and E.F. known as Napoleon, 1888.

«EVOCATION.- Every morning, at eight o'clock precisely, he stepped lightly across Plaça de la Universitat – a gentleman already approaching old age, heading for the side door of the lecture building, to the west of the main entrance. He was well dressed, in fine clothes; a knee-length overcoat or jacket, impeccable shoes and, on his head, which he held upright, a fine top hat, which at the time, denoted his role as a professor. In his right hand he held a walking stick. The other he brought to his mouth from time to time to suck on the remains of an aromatic Havana cigar. He was a pleasant man, with quick movements. He was our dear "Don Elías", whose lecture we were happily awaiting in the corridor of the School of Architecture, before the toll of the bell called us into class
