The University of Barcelona began to adapt its course offerings to the European Higher Education Area (EHEA) in the academic year 2006-2007. Within this framework, doctoral students are now required to complete a doctoral program comprising a training period which, in general terms, consists of the research pathway of one or more than one university master’s degree course, and which is then followed by a research period, meaning organized research culminating in the completion and defence of a doctoral thesis.
