Introduction

The bachelor's degree in Medicine provides the necessary knowledge from the sciences on which medicine is based, emphasizing understanding of scientific methods, the principles of the measurement of biological functions, the assessment of scientifically proven facts and data analysis.

The bachelor's degree in Medicine aims to train doctors able to meet the demands of society and capable of performing the tasks specific to the profession, such as anamnesis, examination, medical procedures, diagnosis, prognosis, health promotion and prevention. It also prepares students to approach their professional practice based on knowledge of basic, social and clinical sciences, always in accordance with the fundamental principles of medicine, and to carry out other healthcare roles (research, teaching and management) and master important skills for their personal development (self-criticism and self-assessment, independent learning, teamwork, personal care, professionalism and motivation, and a holistic perspective). The Faculty of Medicine at the University of Barcelona has been training generation after generation of excellent doctors for more than 100 years. It consistently tops the ranking of medical schools in Spain and is the only one included in the top 100 medical schools worldwide.

Objectives

The objective of the bachelor's degree in Medicine is to train doctors with the following skills:

  • To perform standard tasks in medicine such as anamnesis, exploration, medical procedures, diagnosis, prognosis, health promotion and prevention.
  • To tackle the profession with sound knowledge of the basic, social and clinical sciences and the fundamental principles of medicine.
  • To perform other functions in the field of healthcare (research, teaching and management) and to develop the skills required for professional development (self-critical and self-assessment capabilities, independent learning skills, teamwork skills, self care, professionalism and motivation, a holistic perspective).

Competences

Graduates in Medicine acquire the following competences:

  1. Capacity to understand and recognise the structure and function of the human body and the effects and symptoms of the diseases that act upon it.
  2. Knowledge of health determinants in populations and the capacity to analyse epidemiological data, in order to play a role in the action plans to prevent diseases.
  3. Capacity to communicate clearly and effectively with patients and other professionals.
  4. Capacity to prepare a clinical history, conduct a physical exploration and interpret complementary tests to establish a diagnosis and prognosis and to start a therapeutic strategy based on available scientific evidence.
  5. Capacity to use information and communication technologies in clinical, preventive and research activities and to make use of sources of biomedical information from a critical perspective and ensuring confidentiality.
  6. Capacity to understand the fundamentals of the scientific method in the study, prevention and control of diseases and to carry out research activities.
  7. Capacity to demonstrate an awareness and understanding of the importance of ethical principles, legal responsibilities and patient-centred professional practice.

Previous years

Placements

Placements are supervised by tutors and subject to assessment.They are therefore included in the academic record.  There is also an option to complete non-curricular placements of up to 500 hours, which can be extended to 900 hours. For both curricular and non-curricular placements, an educational cooperation agreement is signed between the UB and the company, institution or other organization at which the placement will be carried out.

What can you work on ?

Medicine offers a wide range of career opportunities in public, private or mixed sectors, with one of the highest employability rates. The most common pathway is for graduates in medicine to specialize through the national programme of specialized health training (FSE), known as the MIR system. UB medical graduates always obtain good results in the MIR exam, and the Faculty usually occupies one of the top three positions in Spain for the success rate of students obtaining an MIR position is measured.
