This master's degree is an advanced academic programme that complements students' language training with an in-depth study of Spanish and Latin American literature. It reflects the growing interest in Hispanic language and culture in all international arenas, particularly in the English-speaking world.

Barcelona is one of the most important publishing centres in the Iberian Peninsula, and many Latin American authors have come to international prominence through its publishing houses. Barcelona has had strong links with Latin American literature since the time of the Latin American Boom and maintains these links in the present.

Objectives and competences

Objectives

The master's degree in Advanced Studies in Spanish and Latin American Literature offers advanced academic and research training in the two fields that make up the programme: Spanish literature and Latin American literature. As an official master's degree offered by the Department of Hispanic Studies, it is designed to provide continued training for graduate students in this area and the requisite training in research to facilitate access to doctoral studies for those looking to prolong their academic training. Students will learn to apply scientific methodology to the analysis of authors, works and periods, taking in comparative analysis, critical reception and cross-disciplinary aspects, in accordance with new university guidelines and the evolving pluralism of contemporary society.

General competences

Upon completion of the course, successful students will be able to:
  • display linguistic awareness to read texts critically and to correctly interpret and comprehend their meaning;
  • display respect for ethics and intellectual integrity and learn to present and discuss personal opinions openly and independently, showing clarity and rigor in evaluating their own arguments and those of others;
  • understand the basic elements of intellectual work, that is, how to acquire knowledge (resources, bibliographies, complementary disciplines), and make good use of techniques for the presentation and dissemination of results (writing reviews and research reports, preparing lectures and public presentations such as debates, etc.);
  • work in teams involved in multidisciplinary and integrated research into common elements of diverse traditional cultures;
  • identify the presence of aspects of their studies in current topics of debate outside academic circles and use them correctly to interpret the current reality;
  • carry out an original research project, with critical and scientific rigor, applying the knowledge and skills acquired during the master's degree.



Specific competences

With regard to the specific applications of the course, students will also be able to:
  • display an in-depth understanding of the fundamental theoretical and practical concepts relevant to Spanish and Latin American historical, cultural and literary contexts;
  • interrelate the historical, cultural, ideological and aesthetic aspects of Spanish and Latin American cultures;
  • interrelate Spanish and Latin American culture with European and North American culture, in general, in order to understand and integrate common cultural elements in the West;
  • place the various written or artistic manifestations in historical, literary, ideological and aesthetic contexts, in order to evaluate them with respect to tradition;
  • formulate a critical view of Spanish and Latin American texts and documents from different perspectives (historical, literary, philosophical or artistic);
  • understand the main lines of research in Hispanic studies, the range of methodologies used and the most problematic aspects of work in this field;
  • display an up-to-date understanding of the latest developments presented in the international scientific community.

Applicant profile and access requirements

Recommended applicant profile

The master's is primarily addressed to holders of bachelor's degrees and pre-EHEA degrees Hispanic studies. It may also be of interest to students from other language programmes, as well as graduates in humanities, history, history of art, philosophy and communication sciences.

The master's degree coordinator and tutor, in conjunction with the Admissions Committee, will examine all applications and may accept students from other academic backgrounds who show a particular interest in the course content (for example, those with accredited professional experience in a related field). Candidates must demonstrate ability, knowledge, interest and curiosity for in-depth study of the Spanish language and Hispanic literature.

Access requirements and conditions

General requirements
In accordance with Article 16 of Royal Decree 1393/2007, of 29 October, students wishing to be admitted to a university master's degree must hold one of the following qualifications:

  • Official Spanish university degree.

  • A degree issued by a higher education institution within the European Higher Education Area framework that authorizes the holder to access university master's degree courses in the country of issue.

  • A qualification issued by an institution outside the framework of the European Higher Education Area. In this case, applicants must request homologation of the degree to its equivalent official Spanish university qualification or obtain express approval from the University of Barcelona, which will conduct a study of equivalence to ensure that the degree is of a comparable level to an official Spanish university qualification and that it grants access to university master's degree study in the country of issue. Admission shall not, in any case, imply that prior qualifications have been recognized as equivalent to a Spanish master's degree and does not confer recognition for any purposes other than that of admission to the master's degree course.

Specific requirements
In accordance with Royal Decree 1393/2007, access to the master's degree may only be granted to holders of a bachelor's degree or pre-EHEA degree issued by a Spanish or European university.
  • Bachelor's degree/pre-EHEA degree in history, history of art, philosophy, romance studies, classics, Catalan, Spanish literature, literary studies, linguistics and humanities.
  • Pre-EHEA degree in English, French, Galician, Portuguese, Hebrew studies, Semitic languages, literary theory and comparative literature.
  • Bachelor's degree in English studies, modern language and literature or Arabic and Hebrew studies.

Qualifications different from those listed above will also be accepted, provided that their general learning objectives and skills profiles are similar.

Students must have an advanced level of Spanish (equivalent to level B2 or above). Students from non-Spanish speaking countries must provide proof of their level via a certificate, academic record or interview.

Students who must complete the module of bridging courses: Students with qualifications other than history, the humanities, languages and literature, linguistics or literary studies, as well as students whose mother tongue is not Spanish.

Notes:

  • Pre-enrolment fee: A pre-enrolment fee of 30,21 euros is charged. Students who apply to more than one master's degree must pay the fee for each pre-enrolment request. Pre-enrolment requests cannot be processed until this fee has been paid.Fees will only be refunded if the master's degree in question is suspended.
  • Reserved places: A maximum of 5% of the new places of the master's degree are reserved for students who meet the general and specific access requirements and accredit the recognition of a degree of disability equal to or greater than 33%.

Required documentation

Selection criteria

The following selection criteria shall be considered:
  • Student's curriculum vitae and academic record (75%).
  • Certificate showing level of knowledge of foreign languages, to ensure that students can access sources of information on Spanish culture that are written in other languages (10%).
  • Certification of having taken literature-related subjects in previous qualifications (10%).
  • Interview with the candidate, if required by the coordinator or selection committee (5%).

Notification

The selection committee responsible for evaluating applications comprises the master's coordinator, the tutor and two additional teachers.

As a general rule, at the UB you will be required to enrol online. Remember that you can lose your place if you do not enrol on the day you have been assigned

Placements

Placements in a company or another type of organization are an integral part of university studies, providing first-hand experience of working methodologies in students' chosen professional fields. They offer invaluable practical experience for the transition into work after graduation.



Placements are supervised by tutors and subject to assessment. They are therefore included in the academic record.  There is also an option to complete non-curricular placements of up to 500 hours, which can be extended to 900 hours. For both curricular and non-curricular placements, an educational cooperation agreement is signed between the UB and the company, institution or other organization at which the placement will be carried out.

What can you work on ?

One of the main areas of work for graduates of the master's degree in Advanced Studies in Spanish and Latin American Literature is secondary and university teaching, as well as teaching and research in universities abroad. Other career opportunities exist in the business world (publishing, media, private foundations, cultural institutions, advertising, etc.). Graduates may also find positions in areas such as literary criticism, reviewing, digital publishing, blog and web editing, brand building, manuscript assessment, etc.
