Introduction

The official master's degree Financial and Actuarial Sciences replaces the current second-cycle llicenciatura degree in Financial and Actuarial Sciences at the UB, incorporating the subjects in the finance and insurance specialization from the UB master's degree Business Research. As the only university in Catalonia offering studies of this kind, the UB has a long tradition of training insurance actuaries. Actuarial studies are a fundamental requirement for membership in the Catalan Actuarial Association and other similar professional associations in Spain. Fully adapted to the core syllabus of actuarial training approved by the International Actuarial Associations, the design of this master's degree follows a structure that closely resembles the offerings of the most prestigious European universities in the actuarial field. Actuaries are experts in managing risk and quantifying uncertainty. As a result, they are in great demand in sectors such as banking, insurance, companies with their own risk management departments, auditors, consultancies, currency exchange and brokerage firms, and other corporations that need professionals with the quantitative training required to carry out these functions.

Learning objectives

The main objective of the master's degree is to prepare professionals with solid quantitative training (mathematics and statistics) and in business (business management). The master's degree Financial and Actuarial Sciences is an academic degree with a major orientation toward the labour market. However, the strong technical training offered in the program (with the specialization Advanced Financial and Actuarial Models) also provides students with the training needed to begin third-cycle (doctoral) studies.

The master's degree responds to training needs traditionally required in the fields of insurance and finance (pension schemes, financial instruments and markets, etc.), but also, explicitly, to the new demands for training set out in the European Union directive Solvency II (which refers to the actuarial function in article 48, underscoring the knowledge and skills required of actuaries). The master's degree offers specialized training for risk management within companies and to ensure the fulfilment of capital requirements established for organizations in the European Union.
