Objectives and competences

The master's degree in Company and Business Law is an advanced programme that provides specialized and multidisciplinary training to those wishing to become experts in commercial, civil, labour and tax aspects of the law as it relates to the operational activities of a company or business. It also provides an introduction to research activity that can be pursued further under the doctoral programme in Law.

The degree programme encompasses the compulsory and optional subjects necessary to provide each student with the flexibility to fully develop his or her specific academic interests; this allows orientation toward specific degree pathways through the selection of optional subjects grouped in a range of areas related to the compulsory subject areas. The programme has a total study load of 90 credits, structured over three semesters:
  • First semester (30 credits): Students complete subjects in the compulsory subject area Contracting and Business Organization, which form the common core for all of the pathways around which the optional subjects are organized. Additionally, academic guidance is provided to select two of the four optional subjects from the subject area Cross-Disciplinary Approach to Company and Business Law.
  • Second semester (30 credits): Academic guidance is provided to select five optional subjects from the subject areas Commercial Law, Private Contract and Law and Consumer Law, Labour Law, and Tax Law.
  • Third semester (30 credits): Students prepare the Final Project in Company and Business Law under the direction of a tutor, with the aim of gaining experience in the methodologies and instruments of scientific research in the field of law.

Objectives

The master's degree is designed to provide advanced training of a specialized and multidisciplinary nature. It introduces students to research and develops their knowledge of advanced legal concepts in company and business law, from an interdisciplinary perspective.
The objective is to train specialists who can contribute to the theoretical, practical, interdisciplinary and global understanding of commercial, civil, labour, financial and tax aspects of the law as it relates to the operational activities of a company or business.

Competences

Basic competences:
Upon completion of the master's degree, students will be able to:
  • Develop and/or apply ideas in an original way, particularly in research, use ideas to solve problems in new or multidisciplinary environments related to a specific study area.
  • Integrate knowledge and make complex judgements on the basis of incomplete or limited information, taking into account the social and ethical responsibilities associated with these actions.
  • Present conclusions and the grounds on which they are based to specialists and non-specialists, in a clear and concise manner.
  • Demonstrate the learning skills to facilitate further learning requiring a more independent and self-directed approach.


General competences:
Successful students will also be able to:
  • Speak effectively in public.
  • Carry out a skilled search and selection of authoritative information on the issues under study.


Specific competences:
With regard to the specific applications of their knowledge, students will be able to:
  • Identify the most relevant and controversial areas of commercial, civil, labour, financial and fiscal legislation as it relates to the operational activities of a company or business, and formulate hypotheses that help to explain these matters rationally.
  • Identify basic criteria for making business decisions, based on the main analytical instruments in the fields of economics, finance and accounting.
  • Identify and rationalize the underlying philosophical and legal premises in the structural changes that occur in companies, the state, and law in a globalized world.
  • Analyse and compare the basic concepts of private law in legal texts of the English common law code.
  • Apply some of the teaching methods used during the programme.

Recommended applicant profile

The master's degree is designed for graduates in law and labour relations who want to work in research or to acquire more in-depth academic knowledge to support their professional activity. Applicants should have an interest in the following areas:
  • Specialized training in commercial law, civil property law, labour law and tax law.
  • Subsequent admission to doctoral programmes in law, if applicable.
  • University research and teaching (university teaching staff).
  • Legal consultancy for businesses, consumer associations and users.

Access requirements and conditions

General requirements
In accordance with Article 16 of Royal Decree 1393/2007, of 29 October, students wishing to be admitted to a university master's degree must hold one of the following qualifications:

  • Official Spanish university degree.

  • A degree issued by a higher education institution within the European Higher Education Area framework that authorizes the holder to access university master's degree courses in the country of issue.

  • A qualification issued by an institution outside the framework of the European Higher Education Area. In this case, applicants must request homologation of the degree to its equivalent official Spanish university qualification or obtain express approval from the University of Barcelona, which will conduct a study of equivalence to ensure that the degree is of a comparable level to an official Spanish university qualification and that it grants access to university master's degree study in the country of issue. Admission shall not, in any case, imply that prior qualifications have been recognized as equivalent to a Spanish master's degree and does not confer recognition for any purposes other than that of admission to the master's degree course.

Specific requirements
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent undergraduate degree in law.
  • EHEA bachelor's degree in labour relations.
  • Undergraduate degree in labour sciences.

Students are not generally required to take bridging courses before they start the master's course.

Notes:

  • Pre-enrolment fee: A pre-enrolment fee of 30,21 euros is charged. Students who apply to more than one master's degree must pay the fee for each pre-enrolment request. Pre-enrolment requests cannot be processed until this fee has been paid.Fees will only be refunded if the master's degree in question is suspended.
  • Reserved places: A maximum of 5% of the new places of the master's degree are reserved for students who meet the general and specific access requirements and accredit the recognition of a degree of disability equal to or greater than 33%.

Required documentation

Selection criteria

Candidates will be selected mainly on the strength of their academic record in previous studies. The overall mark will be considered. Applications will be given preference according to an objective scoring system (weighting: 75%). In addition, some of the following criteria will be taken into account (weighting: 25%):
  • English language skills (preference will be given to applicants with official qualifications).
  • Other language skills (preference will be given to applicants with official qualifications).
  • Letters of recommendation.
  • Certificates of attendance of seminars, conferences and congresses on topics that will be studied during the master's degree course.
  • Other business-related higher education qualifications.
  • Professional experience.

Notification

The Committee will consider all documentation submitted up before each deadline.

Successful candidates must pay a fee of '300 to reserve their place on the course.

Enrolment

As a general rule, at the UB you will be required to enrol online. Remember that you can lose your place if you do not enrol on the day you have been assigned

Course curriculum

Placements

Placements in a company or another type of organization are an integral part of university studies, providing first-hand experience of working methodologies in students' chosen professional fields. They offer invaluable practical experience for the transition into work after graduation.



Placements are supervised by tutors and subject to assessment. They are therefore included in the academic record.  There is also an option to complete non-curricular placements of up to 500 hours, which can be extended to 900 hours. For both curricular and non-curricular placements, an educational cooperation agreement is signed between the UB and the company, institution or other organization at which the placement will be carried out.
