Introduction

The master's in Economic History is an interuniversity degree offered by the University of Barcelona (UB) in conjunction with the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB) and the University of Zaragoza. It is intended primarily to train researchers capable of examining, understanding and solving problems related to the economic development of societies through the analysis of past economic events. As a longer-term goal, it is also designed to create knowledge in the areas of economic history and economic development.
To achieve these general objectives the course provides broad training in the advanced theoretical and empirical tools of economic analysis, as well as giving students the historical perspective necessary to examine, understand and solve problems related to societal economic development.
The main language of instruction Spanish, but a good knowledge of English is also required in order to follow the various learning activities. Classes are held at the faculties of Economics and Business of the UB and the UAB and at the Faculty of Economics of the University of Zaragoza.

Learning objectives

The master's degree in Economic History is a multidisciplinary programme with a global focus that offers advanced training in research skills, techniques and methods that will allow participants to conduct research in the field of economic history. The course provides students with advanced methodological skills for analysing problems and issues in economic history. It aims to familiarize students with the most up-to-date practices in the discipline and their application by leading international academic institutions. Economic history is an interdisciplinary field that occupies a clearly defined space in the general framework of disciplines such as history, economics and the social sciences.
The advanced training that the master's degree provides will give students the knowledge, skills and competences to:
  • Conduct innovative research in specific areas of economic history.
  • Conduct research and describe the effects of advances in economic history within the international context.
  • Pursue further training on the doctoral programme in Economic History, acquiring the specialized research training to prepare a doctoral thesis with the necessary academic and scientific rigour.
