Exhibition "Telescopi Assumpció Català", at the Historical Building
Exhibition during the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, celebrated on February 11 and which aims to support women scientists and promote the access to education for girls, capacity and research in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics, as well as their participation in these activities.
Maria Assumpció Català i Poch (Barcelona, 1925-2009) was the first woman to obtain the doctorate in Mathematics, in 1970, at the University of Barcelona. He taught at the UB from 1953 to 1990. Her research was focused on the evolution of sun spots, the dynamics of stellar systems and the history of astronomy in Al-Andalus. She worked at the University of Paris VI and was recognized with a Sant George's Cross by the Generalitat de Catalunya in 2009.
In 2015, the Assumpció Català telescope was set up in the Astronomical Park of Montsec. It is a Dall-Kirkham reflecting telescope of 50 centimeters in diameter, the biggest one in the center. It has an educational use for the university, secondary schools and primary schools. This tool allows seventy people to see bodies of the Solar System to even galaxies of the remote Universe.
The exhibition, which was fourteen panels, turns around the Assumpció Català telescope and the female scientist.
