The Faculty of Education at the University of Barcelona is located on the Mundet Campus and offers undergraduates official bachelor's degrees in Education, Social Work and Social Education.
Students choosing the bachelor's degree in Education will learn to design educational and training curricula that meet the profiles and needs of learners, organizations and society in general. They will acquire the knowledge and skills to analyse and orientate complex situations in personal, professional, social and cultural development.
Marc Domenech explains why he enrolled in the bachelor's degree in Education: "For me, school was always an uncomfortable place to be and studying wasn't a pleasant experience. I needed to find a way to resolve this conflict, by studying how teaching and learning work and identifying how the two processes can be improved, how schools can be turned into creative spaces for unlocking the real potential of human faculties". Marc says that the degree "gives me the opportunity to explore all of the areas of education and human development that interest me and is intellectually stimulating. The teaching and the general atmosphere are conducive to academic rigour and in-depth study, which help me to grow as a person".
For Marc, the best thing about the Faculty is its privileged location on the UB's Mundet Campus: "Natural surroundings and peace and quiet are very important to me. I consider myself very lucky to study here". He goes on to explain that, "I am delighted with the degree – it has given me many of the things I was looking for".
The degree in Education not only teaches students to design, implement and evaluate educational and personal development programmes but also provides the skills to plan, manage and assess education and training initiatives in social and institutional contexts.
Students who enrol in the bachelor's degree in Social Education will develop an understanding of the scientific principles and acquire the practical skills to analyse and explain basic tenets in social education in a variety of community contexts. They will acquire the knowledge, know-how, attitudes and skills to design, develop and assess socio-educational resources and projects in a variety of changing contexts, and to promote an environment of social participation and learning, demonstrating an integrative understanding of the social importance of education, its relevance to people of all ages and its role in social change.
Finally, the Faculty of Education offers the official bachelor's degree in Social Work, intended for those looking to pursue careers in areas such as social assistance and development, social inclusion and insertion, and the protection of at-risk groups and individuals. Graduates in Social Work will have acquired the training to reduce and prevent social inequalities and injustices, to improve the welfare of individuals and communities, and to provide information and guidance to users of social services, community programmes and public resources.
Mar López enrolled in the UB diploma in Social Work, a qualification that is being phased out with the introduction of the European Higher Education Area and converted into the new bachelor's degree. Mar decided to study Social Work "after four years of full-time work, which definitely influenced my choice when it came to selecting a degree and deciding what direction I wanted my career to take. While I was working I developed a real interest in everything related to the complex concept of society, which encouraged me to find out what courses were available. I discovered that the UB offered the diploma in Social Work, a course I hadn't heard of before, and decided that it would be the best choice from the point of view of my career and for satisfying my intellectual curiosity in the subject".
For Mar, the best thing about the course is "the chance to work towards improving the society we live in, making it better for the most vulnerable". Of the Faculty itself, she says that, "Leaving aside services and administrative aspects, I am impressed with the general atmosphere, which is a product of the social studies that are taught here. They create an environment in which you can sense a real interest in society and a reasonable confluence of interests, given the diversity of the student population".
Mar was asked if she would recommend studying Social Work at the UB: "Absolutely, my experience here has been nothing but positive. I think I can speak for a lot of the other students too, as we have gradually developed a shared idea of the extent to which we are developing and coming to understand our future profession. By studying Social Work at the University of Barcelona we have able to work with a wide range of teachers who have passed on their knowledge and personal experience and helped us to acquire a solid understanding of the subject".
