Around 150 experts from around the world will take part in the XV International Symposium on Luminescence Spectrometry (ISLS), a scientific meeting that has be inaugurated in a ceremony chaired by the rector of the UB, Dr. Dídac Ramírez, on Wednesday, 20 June, at the Aula Magna of the Historic Building. The event has be also attended by Dr. Joan Esteva de Sagrera, dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy; Dr. M. Asunción Alsina, professor from the Department of Physicochemistry of the Faculty of Pharmacy and president of the congress, and Dr. Willy Baeyens, honorary president of ISLS 2012.

The symposium, which will take place on 19-22 June, is organised by the Biointerficies Research Group, which is directed by professor M. Asunción Alsina. The scientific committee is made up of renowned experts from around the world with extensive experience and recognised merits in this field of knowledge.

The new edition of the congress, which takes place for the first time in the city of Barcelona, aims to strengthen new frontier research on biophysics and analytical aspects of fluorescence spectroscopy in areas such as nanomaterials and their applications (for example, quantum dots, seminconductor nanocrystals, etc.); luminescence in Biology and Medicine (bioassays and biophysics, model membranes); molecular luminescent imaging and analytical applications of luminescence (drug analysis, bioanalysis, environmental monitoring, forensic and clinical assays, food safety, proteomics, genomics and trace analysis of high-purity materials, etc.).

The program of the symposium will include over thirty oral presentations and eighty posters, together with plenary lectures by Manuel Prieto (University of Lisbon); Paavo Kinnunen (University of Helsinki); Jean Jacques Aaron (University of Paris-East - Marne-la-Vallée); Jordi Borrell (Department of Physicochemistry, UB); Ana M. García-Campaña (University of Granada); Xinrong Zhang (Tsinghua University) and Aldo Roda (University of Bologna). The closing session will pay tribute to lecturers Kazuhiro Imai (Musashino University) and Kenichiro Nakashima (Nagasaki University), honorary members of the scientific committee of the symposium, for their dedication to all the editions of the congress.
