The UB is the university that has received the most first-choice applications for admissions in Catalonia, in particular, 33.18 % out of the total, compared to 32.83 % last year. The University of Barcelona has received 16,007 first-choice applications, which means 1.5 first-choice applications for each place offered. The UB is also the university with most students, 11,761 in total, 29.40 % of the system, which represents an increase compared to last academic year (29.12 %), despite the fact that this year the UB admits fewer students, 10,889 compared to 10,949 last academic year.
The five most popular first-choice university degrees in Catalonia for the academic year 2012-2013 are offered by the UB: Medicine, 1,770 first-choice applications; Business Administration and Management, 1,261; Psychology, 1,054; Nursing, 929, and Primary Education, 900. They are followed by the Bachelor’s degree in Medicine at the UAB, Engineering in Industrial Technologies (UPC), Medicine (URV) and Law and Early Childhood Education at the UB. The highest score to get into the UB was for Medicine, with 12.332 points.
A total of 48,240 students have pre-enrolled this year at one of the seven public universities in Catalonia, out of who 37,215 have taken the University Entrance Examination or are holders of vocational training certificates. This represents a decrease of 2.12 % compared to last year’s figure. There are 1,590 university students who want to study for a second degree, which means a reduction of 22.02 % compared to last academic year. The number of students who have taken the university entrance examinations for students over 25 and 45 years of age has also dropped 21.88 %, with 1,464 students. Finally, the number of students applying to change degree programs diminishes slightly, 8.55 %, with 7,971 students.
