Social entrepreneurship, unlike other ways of creating a business, develops new strategies which are oriented towards social change and harmonize economic profit with social and environmental challenges. “It is an ethical, ecological and fair entrepreneurship, which generates employment; it produces not only economic profit, but also a positive return to society”, affirms Virgínia Ferrer, Commissioner for Participation, Employability and Social Entrepreneurship of the UB.

Social Startup Meeting is the first UB social entrepreneurial action in Barcelona. “It is a public and socializing initiative to help and encourage socio-entrepreneurial young voices and university students”, explains Ferrer. The opening ceremony happens today, Friday 3rd May, at 5 p.m.; it will be conducted by Jil van Eyle, founder of Teaming. During the weekend, several professionals from emerging companies and experts on social entrepreneurship will act as mentors for young entrepreneurs. “The event will gather 100 UB students and graduates who, together with other young voices, will turn their original ideas into a social entrepreneurial collaborative project”, ensures Ferrer.

To foster young peopleʼs entrepreneurial spirit

Social Startup Meeting Barcelona follows the methodology “to learn creating” of Startup Weekend, an organization which supports the meeting too. In only one weekend, this intensive meeting wants to provide potential entrepreneurs with a different creative way of developing their competences that will enable them to work cooperatively in order to turn their ideas into business models.

Participants will be informed about the necessary tools to set up a social start-up. They will work in cross-disciplinary working groups. Technological, entrepreneurial and social mentoring will be offered, as well as professional feedback, and networking within a social entrepreneurship community.

Experienced entrepreneurs

Social Startup Meeting aims to be a meeting point for Young entrepreneurs and to bring closer social entrepreneurial experiences of professionals who will act as mentors: Jordi Ibáñez, Jordi Via, Montserrat Duran, Ramón Vives, Sònia Mulero, Andrea Balletbò, Conxita Herms, Eduardo Elosegui, Jaume Oller, Javier Varas, Jesús Purroy, Josep Maria Corbinos, Luz Fernández, Marta Pérez Flotats, Oriol Palom, Sheila Mas, Xavier Martí Renom and Xavier Pont.
