Albert Bosch, professor from the Department of Microbiology of the UB, was appointed President of the Spanish Society for Virology for the period 2013-2016, in the elections held within the 12th Spanish National Congress of Virology, which took place in Burgos from 9 to 12 June.

Professor Bosch, who headed the Department of Microbiology of the UB from 2001 to 2006, is the main researcher of the Consolidated Research Group on Enteric Viruses of the UB, a prestigious group in the study of human viruses which infect the gastrointestinal tract, such as the hepatitis A virus and other pathogens responsible for gastroenteritis (astrovirus, norovirus, rotavirus, etc.). It was the first university laboratory in Spain which received the good laboratory practices (GLP) recognition. Its research lines in environmental microbiology and biotechnology stand out.

Albert Bosch highlights that “according to data provided by the World Health Organization, viral diseases represent two thirds of the total number of medical appointments due to infections. Nowadays, Spanish virologists are prestigious in basic research fields and the research applied to sectors (biomedicine, veterinary medicine, agriculture, etc.)”. Consequently, he concludes: “In the framework of the new presidency, my main objective is to promote and foster virology in all knowledge and research fields”.
