Yesterday, 11 July, UB signed an agreement to exchange students, teaching staff and administrative and service staff with the University of São Paulo (USP), the major institution of higher education and research in Brazil. The agreement between both institutions is particularly relevant as UB is the main public Catalan university and USP is the most important Brazilian one. The signature coincided with the official visit of the President of the Government of Catalonia, Artur Mas, to the country.

The collaboration with the University of São Paulo started in 2007. A total of 28 students from both universities have made international stays since then. Now, it is planned to offer stays to administrative and service staff and teaching staff. In the case of students, universities will exchange two students per academic year or four if they stay only one semester.

Moreover, an academic office of UB will be created at the University of São Paulo in some months; this is a key aspect of the collaboration. The main objective of the office is to promote research and education activities, particularly the cooperation in masterʼs and doctoral degrees, management, entrepreneurship and sustainability.

Besides the agreement with this university, UB ratified an agreement with Santa Catarina State University. The collaboration with this Brazilian institution is extended to the mobility of students and teaching and research staff and the development of collaborative research and academic activities.

Both agreements strengthen the presence of the University of Barcelona in South America.
