The main objectives of SENC are to promote the research on neuroscience, to foster the collaboration with societies and other national and international research institutions, to facilitate the integration of the research focused on the different organization levels of the nervous system, and to inform about results and implications of the advances done in neuroscience.

Dr Alberch holds a degree and a PhD in Medicine and Surgery from the UB. He is expert in the pathophysiology of neurodegenerative diseases. He has developed his research activity in several centres, such as Georgetown University and Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, in the United States, and the Karolinska Institute, in Sweden. Currently, he heads the Consolidated Research Group on Pathophysiology of Neurodegenerative Diseases of the UB, and coordinates the Group on Cellular Biology of Pathological Processes (Area of Clinical and Experimental Neuroscience) of the August Pi i Sunyer Biomedical Research Institute (IDIBAPS). Dr Alberch also coordinates the research group on Huntington disease of the Centre for Networked Biomedical Research on Neurodegenerative Diseases (CIBERNED); he is member of the Cell Therapy Network for Cooperative Research (TERCEL) of the Institute of Health Carlos III.

Dr Alberch has published more than one hundred articles on international journals. He is member of the editorial board of some scientific publications. He also collaborates as copy editor in most international journals in the field of neuroscience and in national and international evaluation agencies.
