The Education, Audiovisual and Culture Executive Agency (EACEA) of the European Union selected the project Nova Domus (Network of America and Europe for Doctoral Mobility at Universities), coordinated by the University of Barcelona, as a new Action 2 Erasmus Mundus programme; it aims at giving grants to doctoral students, postdoctoral researchers and staff who wish to go either from the EU to USA or Canada or from USA or Canada to the EU.

The main objective of the project is to create a network of excellence that would encourage the transversal flow of knowledge and strengthen the relationship between participating institutions: the North-American ones Dalhousie University, the University of British Columbia, the University of Montreal, the University of Ottawa and Brown University, and the European ones Lund University, the University of Bologna, the University of Glasgow, the University of Leuven-KU Leuven, Pompeu Fabra University, the Autonomous University of Barcelona and the University of Barcelona.

Scholarships cover travel expenses, monthly subsistence allowance and insurance. The programme is addressed to doctoral students, postdoctoral researchers and staff, who work in the fields of medical sciences, natural sciences and engineering and technology. Nova Domus has at its disposal a budget of 1,318,725 euros. A total of seventy grants will be distributed in the following way: 56% for doctoral students, 20% for postdoctoral researchers and 24% for staff. Those interested can apply for a grant in January and February 2014.

The proposal was presented by a consortium led by Professor Amparo Cortés, from the Department of Natural Products, Plant Biology and Edaphology, representing the Doctoral School of the UB. Associate partners are the Institute of Photonic Sciences, the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, Johns Hopkins University, McGill University and the University of Georgia.

The project is the result of the collaboration between the Office of the Vice-Rector for International Policy and the Office of the Vice-Rector for Science Policy of the UB.
