Mariano Marzo, professor of Stratigraphy and teacher of Petroleum Geology and Energy Resources at the Faculty of Geology of the University of Barcelona (UB), received yesterday, 20 March, the Award for the Best Science and Humanities Dissemination Activities. The Aula Magna of the Historic Building hosted the award ceremony, chaired by the rector of UB, Dídac Ramírez, and the president of the Board of Trustees, Salvador Alemany. Rafael Villaseca, president of the Spanish Energy Club and chief executive officer of Gas Natural Fenosa, participated too.

Mariano Marzo, professor of Stratigraphy and teacher of Petroleum Geology and Energy Resources at the Faculty of Geology of the University of Barcelona (UB), received yesterday, 20 March, the Award for the Best Science and Humanities Dissemination Activities. The Aula Magna of the Historic Building hosted the award ceremony, chaired by the rector of UB, Dídac Ramírez, and the president of the Board of Trustees, Salvador Alemany. Rafael Villaseca, president of the Spanish Energy Club and chief executive officer of Gas Natural Fenosa, participated too.

Rafael Villaseca and Mariano Marzo underlined remarkable economic and social challenges that the energy sector must meet and the importance of involving the science community in this discussion. The award conferred on Professor Marzo, created by the Doctors' Senate and the Board of Trustees of UB, aims at promoting science activities and knowledge transfer in our society.

The first edition of the Award distinguishes Mariano Marzo as “one of the most important, rigorous and prolific science communicators” in the field of energy resources, “with a continuous appearance at the media. The jury also highlighted “his extraordinary ability to communicate knowledge that enables to know which problems and challenges must be met by the society” in the field of energy. Professor Marzo is member of several energy advisory boards of administrations and institutions. Moreover, he keeps a continuous relationship with petroleum industry through research —hydrocarbon exploration— and lifelong learning.

Mariano Marzo is professor of Stratigraphy. He teaches Petroleum Geology and Energy Resources at the Faculty of Geology of the UB. He has published more than 75 articles in scientific journals, edited and co-edited 15 volumes, and given more than one hundred speeches on conferences and congresses. He has been member of several editorial boards of prestigious international journals in the field of Geology. He is member of the Academy of the Sciences and Arts of Barcelona and of the Board of Directors and the Academic Committee of the Spanish Energy Club. He has worked in Europe, the United States, the Middle East and North Africa.
