FameLab is the most important international scientific talks competition organised in more than twenty countries in Europe, Asia, Africa and America. FameLab Spain is co-organised by the British Council and the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECYT), supported by Obra Social la Caixa and Yahoo Noticias. The main aim of the festival is to promote science communication, by training and mentoring scientists and engineers to share their enthusiasm for their subjects with the public through an innovative format: a three-minute presentation.

On Friday 21 March, at the theatre Poliorama, semi-finalists dealt with very diverse topics, for instance colour blindness, Atapuerca finds, biological clock, communication among bacteria or Fermatʼs theorem, in three-minute talks and in front of more than six hundred people.

The jury was composed by the physicist and science communicator Daniel Jiménez; the president of the Catalan Association for Science Communication (ACCC), Cristina Ribas; the comedian Flipy, and Dídac Carmona, Catalan researcher who lives in Austria and won FameLab 2012. The jury emphasized participantsʼ charisma and the clarity of their speeches. The comedienne Yolanda Ramos presented the show that ended with a performance by the stand-up comedian Álvaro Carmona.

UB finalists compete with six other scientists: Helena González, from the Institute for Research in Biomedicine (IRB), affiliated centre with UB; Ana Payo, from the Mediterranean Institute for Advanced Studies (IMEDEA-CSIC); Miguel Abril, from the Institute of Astrophysics of Andalusia (IAA-CSIC); Giorgio Colangelo, from the Institute of Photonic Sciences (ICFO); Juan Junoy, from the University of Alcalá, and José Santiago García, from the University of Murcia. The winner participates in the international final of Cheltenham Science Festival, which takes place from 3 to 8 June.
