During the academic year 2013-2014, the University of Barcelona has paid tuition fees for 109 students (out of 237 who applied for grants) who had to cope with unexpected economic problems. Two other grants were conferred within the UB's student grant programme bkUB: one was aimed at lessening the increase in tuition fees of first repeated subjects (457 out of 662 applications were given), and the other was addressed to new access students, who cannot receive a general grant due to requirement changes (to date, 102 applications have been submitted).

The main objective of the grant addressed to students who are experiencing unexpected economic problems is to pay tuition fees for them in order to avoid withdrawal. Grants are conferred considering some criteria agreed by the governing bodies of the University of Barcelona and the representatives of some student associations. Criteria can be found on calls. This grant also aims at achieving that grant recipients can apply for a grant of the public system in the academic year 2014-2015, like some recipients did in the academic year 2012-2013.

Unexpected situations include: disease or death of any family members who provide economic stability, unemployment, eviction, or any other situation which alter the economic situation of the student who has not received a general grant or has to face a new situation when public grants deadline has already been closed.

Instalment payment

This year, UB offered a seven-instalment payment. This option was added to the three-instalment payment that was implemented last year. On 31 October 2013, 6,140 students had already chosen the seven-instalment payment and 6,670 the three-instalment one, out of a total of 44,808 enrolled students. So, 28.6% of students have already benefited the instalment payment.

Concerning conditional enrolment, the University assumes the amount of credits enrolled for the first time by students who applied for a general grant and have financial accreditation, or they have already received a grant. Nearly 9,000 students have chosen this option.
