A total of 1,080 students and 445 lecturers participated in the 39 courses organised within the 18th edition of Els Juliols de la UB, the biggest summer school in Catalonia. This year's edition included the course offerings of the International Summer School (UBISS) of UB, the summer courses of the University taught in English. “This year, Els Juliols included the courses addressed to foreign students; they enable to bring these people closer to the University of Barcelona as activities were developed at several faculties”, affirms the director of the Area of Further Training of UB, Xavier Varea. Moreover, like in previous editions, Els Juliols also included the courses of the 7th Universitat dʼEstiu de les Dones (UED), co-organised by UB and Cornellà de Llobregat City Council. Its main objective is to provide alternative education in gender equality at Catalan universities.

Els Juliols courses took place from 30 June to 25 July, most of them at the Historic Building of UB. In order to bring courses closer to the whole society, some of them happened at other locations in Barcelona —for instance at the Gas Natural Fenosa Foundation and the Picasso Museum—, and in four other towns: Cornellà de Llobregat, LʼHospitalet de Llobregat, Terrassa and Vilafranca del Penedès. On this edition, it has been proved again that Els Juliols of UB are addressed to the general public: university students, secondary education students, professionals who want to improve their skills and people interested in enlarging their knowledge enrolled on courses.

As usual, many public organizations and companies supported Els Juliols by means of collaboration and sponsorship agreements. “The University is more and more interested in establishing agreements with other institutions in order to diversify academic training”, says Xavier Varea. Among the organizations that joined the programme, we highlight the Picasso Museum, the National Theatre of Catalonia (TNC) and the Bosch i Gimpera Foundation (FBG).

Wide and high-quality course offerings

In order to offer an attractive and high-quality academic training, the programme of Els Juliols included many multidisciplinary courses aimed at updating knowledge, exchanging information and opinions, and analysing current affairs.

This year, course topics were diverse and grouped in eight main subject areas: Arts, Resources and strategies, Health Sciences, Humanities, Experimental Sciences, Environment, Social Sciences and Economic Sciences. Some of the most demanded courses were: El pensamiento simbólico (Oriente y Occidente). Aportación a la historia de las artes y de las religiones; Mindfulness para la reducción del estrés; Medicina forense. El CSI català; Dona i literatura: la dona front als reptes literaris; Paseando por Barcelona, and Energía, industria y competitividad (it was the third edition of the course, organised together with the Gas Natural Fenosa Foundation).

Figures prove the success of Els Juliols courses: “Participation was between 90 and 95% and the assessments we have received are very positive, both in practical and theoretical courses”, points out Xavier Varea. “In addition, this year, coordinators were able to organise courses for small groups; that favoured participation and close relationships among participants”, he concludes.
