UB continues to be among the top 200 universities in the world and it is one of the top 75 in Medicine

The University of Barcelona (UB) —the Catalan university with the highest number of students— is one of the top 200 universities in the world, according to the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), a classification also known as the Shanghai Ranking. To be exact, UB is located between position 151 and 200 of this prestigious ranking and it is the only university in the Spanish State that has managed to get in among the world's 200 best universities. In the last years, the University of Barcelona was closed to get this position.

The University of Barcelona (UB) —the Catalan university with the highest number of students— is one of the top 200 universities in the world, according to the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), a classification also known as the Shanghai Ranking. To be exact, UB is located between position 151 and 200 of this prestigious ranking and it is the only university in the Spanish State that has managed to get in among the world's 200 best universities. In the last years, the University of Barcelona was closed to get this position.

Moreover, it is one of the top 75 universities in the world in the field of Medicine (this yearʼs results are better than last yearʼs ones). In addition, it is among the 200 top universities in Sciences, Life Sciences and Social Sciences. Concerning subjects, UB stands out in Chemistry (it is listed among the 150 best universities) and Physics (it is listed among the 200 best universities).

The global ranking is once again topped by American universities. Harvard University, Stanford University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the University of California Berkeley occupy top positions. The top European one is the University of Cambridge, listed as 5th.

The Academic Ranking of World Universities establishes classifications in the following fields: Natural Sciences and Mathematics; Engineering/Technology and Computer Sciences; Life and Agriculture Sciences; Clinical Medicine and Pharmacy, and Social Sciences. Moreover, ARWU publishes rankings in the subjects of Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Computer Sciences, and Economics and Business. ARWU adopts six objective indicators to rank world universities, including the number of alumni and staff winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals; the number of highly cited researchers in 21 research fields established by Thomson ISI (Institute for Scientific Information); the number of articles published in the journals Nature and Science; the number of articles indexed on Science Citation Index - Expanded (SCIE) and Social Sciences Citation Index (SSCI); and, finally, per capita performance.
