UB climbs positions on NTU Ranking and continues being the only Spanish university among the worldʼs top 100 in research productivity

This is the second consecutive year that the University of Barcelona (UB) is the only Spanish university included among the worldʼs top 100, according to the National Taiwan University Ranking (NTU Ranking) 2014. The classification evaluates and ranks productivity and the impact of scientific papers of the top 500 higher education institutions in the world. The UB is located at position 71 together with the VU University Amsterdam. It has climb some positions if we consider that it was listed as 89th in 2013 and 115th in 2012.

This is the second consecutive year that the University of Barcelona (UB) is the only Spanish university included among the worldʼs top 100, according to the National Taiwan University Ranking (NTU Ranking) 2014. The classification evaluates and ranks productivity and the impact of scientific papers of the top 500 higher education institutions in the world. The UB is located at position 71 together with the VU University Amsterdam. It has climb some positions if we consider that it was listed as 89th in 2013 and 115th in 2012. 

The NTU Ranking 2014 is headed by Harvard University (Unites States), Johns Hopkins University (United States), Stanford University (United States), the University of Toronto (Canada) and the University of Washington-Seattle (United States). The European institution first listed on the ranking is the University of Oxford, located at position 8, together with the University of California Berkeley and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

The Performance Ranking of Scientific Papers for World Universities analyses eight bibliometric indicators which are based on the Essential Science Indicators (ESI) of the Institute of Scientific Information (ISI) and the Web of Science (WOS). They evaluate research productivity, impact and excellence.

In 2014 edition, the UB climbs positions in the six fields analysed by the ranking: Agriculture (from 85 to 71), Clinical Medicine (from 65 to 57), Engineering, Computing and Technology (from 159 to 156), Life Sciences (from 99 to 81), Natural Sciences (from 90 to 87; it gets closer to 86th, the position it occupied two years ago) and Social Sciences (from 212 to 180). The University of Barcelona is among the top 100 in Agriculture, Clinical Medicine, Life Sciences and Natural Sciences, and it is the top Spanish university in all these fields.

In the classification by subject, UB also climbs positions in Environment/Ecology, Plant and Animal Science, Electrical Engineering, Pharmacology and Toxicology, Geosciences and Physics. The UB is among the top 100 in the following subjects: Agriculture (56), Environment/Ecology (96), Plant and Animal Science (88), Civil Engineering (86), Pharmacology and Toxicology (48), and Chemistry (53).

It is important to remember that the UB is the only Spanish university included among the worldʼs top 100 universities —it is listed as 76th— in the subject Clinical, Pre-Clinical and Health on the latest edition of the ranking developed by the English journal The Times Higher Education (THE).
