The microbiologist Ricard Guerrero receives the international GlaxoSmithKline Award

Ricard Guerrero, Emeritus Professor from the Department of Pathology and Experimental Therapy of the Faculty of Medicine and former scientific secretary of the Institute for Catalan Studies (IEC), has received the prestigious GlaxoSmithKline Award (International Member of the Year Award). Every year, the award, sponsored by the pharmaceutical company and conferred by the American Society for Microbiology (ASM), honours leading international microbiologists who have contributed in an outstanding way to the development of microbiology in important fields such as education, communication and research. Professor Guerrero receives the award on the next annual meeting of the ASM, which takes place in New Orleans (Louisiana, United States) from 30 May to 2 June 2015.

Ricard Guerrero, Emeritus Professor from the Department of Pathology and Experimental Therapy of the Faculty of Medicine and former scientific secretary of the Institute for Catalan Studies (IEC), has received the prestigious GlaxoSmithKline Award (International Member of the Year Award). Every year, the award, sponsored by the pharmaceutical company and conferred by the American Society for Microbiology (ASM), honours leading international microbiologists who have contributed in an outstanding way to the development of microbiology in important fields such as education, communication and research. Professor Guerrero receives the award on the next annual meeting of the ASM, which takes place in New Orleans (Louisiana, United States) from 30 May to 2 June 2015.

Ricard Guerrero, member of the Biodiversity Research Institute of the UB (IRBio), is expert on ecogenetics and one of the main promoters of microbial ecology in Spain. He received the Narcís Monturiol Medal of the Government of Catalonia (2000). He is a founding member of the Spanish Biotechnology Society and he has carried out important studies on the first stages of the communities that evolved on Earth and on geophysiology.

Currently, Ricard Guerrero is the academic director of the Barcelona Knowledge Hub of the Academia Europaea. Moreover, he chairs the Alsina i Bofill Foundation and is member of the board of directors of the Catalan Society of Biology (SCB). He has published many papers on genetics, biochemistry and ecology, and he is member of the editorial board of some international and national scientific journals. He is also a prestigious science communicator and honorary member of the Catalan Association for Science Communication (ACCC), an organization that aims at promoting, spreading, broadening and improving scientific communication.
