Doctor Joan Massagué, co-founder of the Institute for Research in Biomedicine (IRB Barcelona), affiliated centre with HUBc, the health campus of the University of Barcelona (UB), has been awarded the Spanish National Research Award 2014, in the biology category, by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Competitivity.

Doctor Joan Massagué, co-founder of the Institute for Research in Biomedicine (IRB Barcelona), affiliated centre with HUBc, the health campus of the University of Barcelona (UB), has been awarded the Spanish National Research Award 2014, in the biology category, by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Competitivity.

Massagué, director of the Cancer Biology and Genetics Programme of the Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York, has been awarded the prize “for his exceptional contributions to the field of oncology”, announced the Ministry. The Catalan researcher is a world expert in signalling pathways and transcription mechanisms that determine cell behaviour and metastasis in cancer.

Joan Massagué i Solé (Barcelona, 1953) holds a degree in Pharmacy and a PhD in Biochemistry. Massagué has been in the USA since 1982. In November 2013, he took up the position of director of the prestigious Sloan Kettering Institute in New York, the research branch of the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, one of the worldʼs leading centers in cancer research. He was adjunct director of IRB Barcelona and he directs now the External Advisory Board of the Institute.
