International experts will discuss how identities occur within a complex network of political, economic, social and cultural relations, sustained by monarchical, nobility and institutional powers. From the Renaissance to present days, these power relations have interfered in the ideological and sentimental construction of nationalisms.

The inaugural speech is pronounced by Susanne Kubersky Piredda, expert from the Max Planck Institute for Art History (Rome). She analyses the construction of churches in Rome made by several countries in order to host the pilgrims that come from each country; they were named ʻnational churchesʼ. On Thursday 23, Michele Cometa, expert from the University of Palermo, gives the lecture “Globale vs Locale: lʼidea della literatura universale”, which has a sociological perspective. On Friday 24, Helmut C. Jacobs, expert on Goya from the UniversityDuisburg-Essen, pronounces the lecture “Imágenes del enemigo y su superación: la confrontación y destrucción ingeniosa de diferentes nacionalismos en El 2 de mayo de 1908 y El 3 de mayo de 1808 de Francisco de Goya”.

Although the research group ACAF/ART-GEAM Grup dʼEstudis Art Modern is focused on the study of art in the Modern era, the seminar also includes speeches centred on contemporary art. Art creations and historical contexts from different countries, as well as the case of Catalonia, will be analysed.
