To promote institutional collaboration in research programmes, to facilitate the development of masterʼs and doctoral programmes and to foster joint investment in entrepreneurial activities are some of the strategic actions included in the new agreement established between the University of Barcelona (UB) and the Yachay University for Experimental Technology and Research, in Ecuador.

Today, 10 November, the agreement was signed by the rector of the UB, Dr Dídac Ramírez, and the rector of the Yachay Tech University, Dr Fernando Albericio, at the Sala de Juntas of the Rectorʼs Offices of the University of Barcelona.

The agreement establishes the mechanisms that will enable both universities to develop joint actions in education, science, technology and other areas which are interesting for both institutions. This new collaboration framework plans to develop common research projects and lifelong learning programmes that will attract research talent and help professionals to adapt themselves to the changes that are happening in the world. The agreement also promotes the organization of courses, lectures, seminars; the exchange of knowledge among lecturers and researchers, and studentsʼ mobility between both countries.

The Yachay University for Experimental Technology and Research, created by the government led by the president Rafael Correa, is headed by Dr Fernando Albericio, professor of Organic Chemistry from the University of Barcelona and former director of the Barcelona Science Park (PCB-UB).

The main objective of Yachay, which means ʻlearningʼ in Kichwa language, is to create an international model that promotes research activities, learning, technology and professional development in Ecuador and Latin America. This higher education institution, which began its teaching activity in 2014, is facing the challenge of becoming a model in scientific research by developing human talent, innovative teaching, research and knowledge-based economy.
