As students come from different countries and Spanish regions, the exhibition has been an opportunity to improve their language skills and know better Catalanʼs society.

The rector of the UB, Dídac Ramírez, chairs the opening which takes place on Wednesday 19 November at 6 p.m. at the vestibule of the Historic Building of the UB. The vice-rector for Students and Language Policy, Gemma Fonrodona; the director general of Language Policy of the Government of Catalonia, Ester Franquesa; the deputy director general for Universities of the Government of Catalonia, Josep Ribas, and students Sandra Adriana Rebassa and Abel Carretero participate in the presentation too.

Nikol Krestovska, student of the masterʼs degree in Cultural Heritage Management and Museology, was born in the Czech Republic and raised in Germany. She explains that due to the historical circumstances of her home country, she feels “affinity for the topic that centres the exhibition”. “This experience —she points out— has offered me the opportunity to know the opinions of Catalan people and exchange points of views”. Natalia Ortega, student of the former masterʼs degree from Bogotá, affirms that “there is no better way to understand the situation of Catalan than analysing it in deep; the exhibition has allowed me to do it”. Both of them consider that the project is a positive experience for their professional future. Natalia says that “to develop a museographic project is a challenge; it helps you to understand the challenges you will face in the future and enables you to take the role of the worker who must develop a product that meet the needs of a client”. Nikol explains that participating in the exhibition has enabled her to discover that she really likes creating exhibitions and she would like to devote herself to it in the future. “I have learnt how to plan an exhibition: from the museum script to its mounting”, she explains.

The title of the exhibition “Obrint portes” (opening doors) emphasises the ability of Catalan language to “open doors to the future”, highlight organizers. The exhibition is divided into seven parts that describe the historical evolution of Catalan at the University. In includes events such as Francoʼs repression and the recognition of its official status when democracy was restored. Moreover, it illustrates Catalanʼs present situation and the challenges brought by internationalization. The exhibition is a chronological overview of Catalan language through texts, images and interviews to students, teachers and professionals from the Language Services of the UB. After visiting the exhibition, people are asked to write their favourite Catalan on a display panel or to say it on a tweet with the hashtag #Obrintportes.
