Six research projects coordinated by the University of Barcelona (UB) have received one of the twenty-one research grants awarded by the BBVA Foundation, an initiative that supports the development of basic science and the dissemination of scientific knowledge. Over one thousand projects bringing together 7,607 researchers competed for the twenty-one BBVA Foundation Grants for Research Projects.

Six research projects coordinated by the University of Barcelona (UB) have received one of the twenty-one research grants awarded by the BBVA Foundation, an initiative that supports the development of basic science and the dissemination of scientific knowledge. Over one thousand projects bringing together 7,607 researchers competed for the twenty-one BBVA Foundation Grants for Research Projects.

The main objective of the call is to increase individual and collective research opportunities in Spain in order to encourage scientific activity in biomedicine (oncology, cardiology, neurodegenerative diseases, etc.), digital humanities (computing tools, digital space, etc.), ecology and conservation biology (habitat restoration and conservation, etc.), and social and economic sciences (R&D policies, business innovation, etc.).

 

The UB projects that have received a BBVA Foundation Grant are:

 

In Biomedicine, with 589 projects submitted and six selected:

 

- Involvement of the Fgf21 System in Obesity-Related Heart Disease. Principal investigator: Francesc Villarroya, professor in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and director of the Institute of Biomedicine of the University of Barcelona (IBUB)

 

In Digital Humanities, with 253 projects submitted and five granted:

 

- Gender Violence 2.0. Principal investigator: Ruth Vilà Baños, from the Department Methods of Research and Diagnosis in Education of the UB.  

In Ecology and Conservation Biology, with 97 projects submitted and five selected:

- Ecological Restoration of Structural Benthic Species on the Continental Shelf. Principal investigator: Andrea Gori, from the Department of Ecology of the UB.

 

- Pilot Restoration Project to Mitigate the Effects of Wastewater Treatment Plant Effluent in Intermittent Rivers. Principal investigator: Francesc Sabater, from the Department of Ecology of the UB.

 

In the category of Social and Economic Sciences, with 117 projects submitted and five granted:

 

- Innovative Spanish Multinationals in the United States and Germany: The Keys to Their Long-Term Competitiveness. Principal investigator: Paloma Fernández, from the Department of Economic History and Institutions of the UB.

 

- Technological Collaboration Networks and Innovation. Determinants and Effects on the Competitiveness of Spanish Firms. Principal investigator: Rosina Moreno, professor in the Department of Econometrics, Statistics and Spanish Economy at the UB.
