On 2 and 3 February, executives of the leading companies in the energy market, representatives of international regulatory agencies and recognized international experts from academia and business fields around the world met at the Barcelona Science Park (PCB) on the 3rd International Symposium Funseam. The gathering was organized by the Foundation for Energy and Environmental Sustainability (Funseam) and the Chair of Energy Sustainability at the University of Barcelona, affiliated to the Barcelona Institute of Economics (IEB).

The gathering was organized by the Foundation for Energy and Environmental Sustainability (Funseam) and the Chair of Energy Sustainability at the University of Barcelona, affiliated to the Barcelona Institute of Economics (IEB).

 

The opening ceremony featured presentations by the Spanish minister for Industry, Energy and Tourism, José Manuel Soria, and the president of Funseam and Enagás, Antonio Llardén. Soria underlined the importance of “economic and financial sustainability of the energy system" as the key to “attracting investment and generating jobs”.

 

The academic conference took place on 3 February. It was opened by the rector of the University of Barcelona, Dídac Ramírez. Then, David Newberty, director of the Energy Policy Research Group at Cambridge University, one of the most renowned international experts who has advised several countries in their processes of energy market liberalization, gave the speech “Security of supply, capacity auctions and interconnectors”.

 

Finally, Maria Teresa Costa Campí, professor in the Department of Public Economy, Political Economy and Spanish Economy and director of the Chair of Energy Sustainability of the UB, brought to a close two days of debate on which the challenge of achieving the objectives of the European Union's for a unified energy market were discussed.
