Dr Maria Pérez Bosch, adjunct lecturer in the Department of Pharmacology and Therapeutic Chemistry of the University of Barcelona (UB), has received the 2014 GEPRONAT Award for young researchers conferred by the Group of Natural Products Chemistry (GEPRONAT) of the Spanish Royal Society of Chemistry. The main objective of the prize is to honour the research developed by under 40 researchers in the field of natural products chemistry.

Maria Pérez has centred his work on the development of new methodologies for the enantioselective synthesis of natural products, in particular marine alkaloids and indole-containing compounds. Recently, she participated in the first total synthesis of madangamine D, a milestone published on the prestigious scientific journal Angewandte Chemie International Edition (2014). The study constitutes the first total synthesis of an alkaloid of the madangamine group. Thanks to its synthesis, first pure sample of this natural product was obtained, as when it was isolated, in really small quantities, madangamine D was not pure as it was mixed with madangamine E.

She got her PhD in Organic Chemistry from the University of Barcelona in 2002. Maria Pérez is member of the Research and Development Center of Organic Synthesis for Chemical and Pharmaceutical Companies (SINTEFARMA), a research group led by professors Joan Bosch and Mercedes Amata, included in TECNIO, a network created by the Government of Catalonia that gathers university groups specialised in industry research and Technology transfer.
