This year, La UB divulga organised the first UB Science Festival, an activity aimed at opening the doors of the University of Barcelona and bringing citizens closer to the research activity developed at the University in an amusing and innovative way. The festival took place last Friday, 22 May, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Different science dissemination activities emphasized the studies developed by UB researchers in every subject area. The Historic Building hosted most activities, but other UB schools and centres also participated in the festival.

The Historic Building hosted a gymkhana that enabled participants to enjoy a great number of workshops and practical demonstrations organised within the festival. The gymkhana was addressed to people 6 and older, grouped into teams of three-five.

For instance, participants enjoyed a short trip to the nano world that helped to understand the meaning of working in the nanoscale and they observed that many common products, like T-shirts, sun creams, portable water purifiers, etc., have been improved thanks to nanotechnology. Moreover, they were showed how to use the app Riu.net, which enables to evaluate in an intuitive and simple way the ecological status of a river and to send data to the research group who created the app. In addition, participants were able to attend a workshop on virtual reality in which a computer programme generates the same physical, psychological, emotional and behavioural reactions than the ones felt in real situations.

The Scientific Culture and Innovation Unit (UCC+i) of the UB organised the activity, supported by the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology of the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness and the Network of Cultural Scientific Units, with the collaboration of the Obra Social la Caixa.
