Since its birth in the 17th century, the concept “coup dʼétat” has evolved to a legal and non-violent action as threats are usually enough to achieve pursued aims. The concept continues including the fact of acting against legitimacy and attacking sovereignty in order to usurp the power. This is the conclusion of the article elaborated by Professor Rafael Martínez “Subtipos de golpes de Estado: transformaciones recientes de un concepto del siglo XVII”, published in the journal Revista CIDOB dʼAfers Internacionals and awarded on the International Congress of the Latin American Studies Association (LASA).
