During the academic year 2014-2015, the University of Barcelona has paid tuition fees for 99 students (out of 136 who applied for grants) who had to cope with unexpected economic problems. Within the programme bkUB— the UB grant programme—, two other grants have been conferred: one aimed at lessening the increase in tuition fees of first repeated subjects (393 out of 435 applications were given), and the other addressed to new access students who cannot receive a general grant due to requirement changes (to date, 43 applications have been submitted).

The main objective of the grant addressed to students who are experiencing unexpected economic problems is to pay tuition fees for them in order to avoid withdrawal. Grants are conferred considering some criteria agreed by the governing bodies of the University of Barcelona and the representatives of some student associations. Criteria are available on calls. The aim is that grant recipients apply for the grants given by the public system the next academic year.

Unexpected situations include: disease or death of any family members who provide economic stability, unemployment, eviction, or any other situation which alter the economic situation of the student who has not received a general grant or has to face a new situation when public grants deadline has already been closed.

Instalment payment

Besides the three-instalment payment, the UB offers a seven-instalment payment. In the academic year 2014-2015, 6,804 students chose the seven-instalment payment and 6,599 the three-instalment one, out of a total of 43,753 enrolled students. Therefore, more than 30% of students have already benefited the instalment payment.

Concerning conditional enrolment, the University assumes the amount of credits enrolled for the first time by students who applied for a general grant and have financial accreditation, or have already received a grant. Nearly 9,000 students have chosen this option.
