Once again, the University of Barcelona joins Saint George's Day celebration with several activities in every campus. The Xarxa de Dinamització Lingüística (language promotion network) has scheduled a new edition of Primavera de la Llengua, which includes the literary award ceremony, book exchanges, conferences and exhibitions, among others. In addition, Editions and Publications of the UB and UB Volunteering will set up some book stands. This year the activities will be carried out during this week and next week because St. Georgeʼs Day is on Saturday.

Once again, the University of Barcelona joins Saint George's Day celebration with several activities in every campus. The Xarxa de Dinamització Lingüística (language promotion network) has scheduled a new edition of Primavera de la Llengua, which includes the literary award ceremony, book exchanges, conferences and exhibitions, among others. In addition, Editions and Publications of the UB and UB Volunteering will set up some book stands. This year the activities will be carried out during this week and next week because St. Georgeʼs Day is on Saturday.

Book stands and book signatures

Like other years, on April 23, Editions and Publications of the UB will have a book stand in Rambla de Catalunya (Rambla de Catalunya-Provença) where they will expose the main editorial novelties of this year, such as La saviesa combinada, La química de cada dia, Simetries per a tothom, Barcelona, ciudad de novela, and Blanquerna, by Ramón Llull (facsimile edition with prologue by Joan Santanach). There will also be a great selection of works from their editorial space in a 9-meter table. The following authors will sign books: Claudi Mans, Jaume Llistosella, Antoni Sànchez-Cuxart, Miquel Àngel Cuevas, Roberto Herrscher, David Bueno, Claudia Vallbé, Domènec Corbella, Joandomènec Ros and Xavier Duran. The 2016 Saint George's Day poster of the University of Barcelona will also be shown in the book stand. It has been designed by the artists and teachers of the Faculty of Fine Arts Marta Negre and Àngels Viladomiu, and it symbolizes the process of hybridization of a new type of rose- named Sant Jordi a la Universitat de Barcelona- born from the automatic fertilization method by the notable Catalan Pere Dot.

In addition, until April 30, Editions and Publications of the UB offers a 40% discount in all books to the University of Barcelonaʼs PDI and PAS. More information can be found here.

Solidary Sant Jordi

For the third year, UB Volunteering and Solidary Service Foundation set up a new edition of #ReciclaCultura at the University of Barcelona. It is an initiative promoting book donation so that other people can get them for a symbolic price in Saint Georgeʼs Day. From the 20th to 22nd of April, together with CRAI and Language Services, 5 stalls will be set up within this project: in the Historic building, in Philosophyʼs CRAI, Geography and History, Health Sciences ca CRAI in Bellvitge, in the Faculty of Law and Mundetʼs campus. People who are interested in the donation can get these copies in exchange for their donations. Literacy and language courses by the Solidary Service to ease social integration in Catalonia will be supported with all the collected money.

In addition, for the first time this year, UB Volunteering takes part in the campaign “Roses contra lʼoblit”, promoted by the entity Amics de la Gent Gran (Friends of Old People). On Friday April 22, these solidary roses will be available at the stand of the Historic Building. The collection will be destined to supporting programs for old people who live alone in solitude.

Faculty of Law

Due to Sant Jordiʼs celebration, the Faculty of Law has scheduled several activities on Thursday April 21. From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., in front of the library, a books stall of the Language Services will be set up, and there will be a wall with writings by the participants of “Canvia un vers per un tall de coca amb xocolata”. At 12.30 noon, the Debate Association of University of Barcelona will offer a workshop on university debates, and at 13 noon the castellers Arreplegats de la Zona Universitària will make a performance in the centre hall.

Faculty of Economy and Business

Several activities will be held in Pati dels estanys in Building 690 at the Faculty of Economy and Business also on the 21st. Among other activities, there will be presentations of books written by teachers of the Faculty, book exchanges and the Award ceremony “Ensaïmada Lingüística 2016” and “lingüístic quality on end-of-degree projects”, as well as the 4th Micronarrations Contest of the Cooperativa lʼEconomista. In addition, the exhibition “Sigues lingüísticament sostenible” can be visited until April 28. It has a collaborative exposition of several book recommendations in different languages.

Mundet Campus

The campus has prepared a series of activities for St. Georgeʼs day on April 21. From 10.30 a.m. to 2 p.m. the Jocs per la Llengua will be held, and at 11.30 a.m the Menta group will offer a concert in the barʼs terrace. At 12.30 noon the sala de graus (bachelorsʼ room) of Migdia I Building will hold the conference “Lʼescola avui: tot és nou?” by the writer and journalist Jaume Carbonell. At 13.30 noon will be the award ceremony Emili Mira and RodaGimcana 2015-2016. In addition, the exhibition “Imatges dʼescola” will be exposed all day in the hall and library: a collection of notebooks, books and school pictures from the 1900-1970s.

Faculty of Fine Arts

In Fine Arts the Sant Jordi activities will be carried out on Friday April 22, from 10 a.m onwards, in the sala de juntes (events room) of the Faculty. Several membres of the teaching staff will give some presentations. At 12 noon, Montserrat López will present the publication of Provisional [entre referents]. At 13 noon, the teachers Marta Alegre and Àngels Viladomiu will expose the poster they designed for the official imatge of Sant Jordi of the University of Barcelona. Related to the poster and its creation, there is an exhibition launched on Wednesday April 27 at 13 noon, called "Híbrids contemporanis”, which can be visited until May 6 in the exhibition room of the Faculty. Other exhibitions to be visited are “Límits, fronteres I plecs. Poesia visual I lectura liminar. 21 proposicions artístiques” (until April 24 in the exhibition room) and “Procés Pictòric: la superfície i la profunditat” (until May 6, in CRAI of Fine Arts).

An art books exchange will take place from the 20th to 22nd April from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. organized by the Secretaryʼs Office for the Students and Teaching Staff.

Faculties of Physics and Chemistry

Between April 21 and 22 there will be a book exchange in the Faculties hall. On the 22nd, the Faculty of Physics will give award for “Paraules de la Física 2016”.

Faculty of Library and Information Sciences

A book exchange table will be hold during April 21 and 22 in the Faculty of Library and Information Sciences. Moreover there will also be the traditional “empaperada” (quoted paper activity) in the stairs of the Faculty, within the activity “Un tast de... tʼagradaria seguir llegint?” which reaches its 8th Edition this year.

Faculty of Geography and History

A wall with literary recommendations will be installed at the campus on April 22. The choir of the Faculty will give a concert in the main hall on Monday 25 at 14. In addition, people can participate in the game ParaUBlari -leaving a quote in the public panel in the hall of the 2nd floor) until April 22.

Faculty of Biology

On Saint Georgeʼs day, the Faculty of Biology has scheduled activities for three days, which include conferences, book presentations and the exhibition Exponatura, among others.

On Monday 25th, together with World Malaria Day, the Aula Magna of the Faculty will hold 3 conferences organized by the entity Africa, Stop Malaria: “Els vectors de la malària, aspectes entomològics” (Carles Arandana), “Incidència de la malària a la RD Congo” (Baganda Fakage), and “Àfrica, Stop Malària: el repte dʼuna micro-ONG front el gran problema de la malària” (Yusupha Njie).

On Tuesday 26th, at 12 noon the session “Els llibres: font de coneixement” will take place in Aula Magna: the authors Joandomènec Ros, Jaume Llistosella, Antoni Sànchez i Cuxart and David Bueno will participate. The awards for the projects of the II Concurs de Microrelats de Ciència en ficció will be given on the same day.

On Thursday 28th the Aula Magna will be the stage of the debate “Per què el Pla Hidrològic de lʼEbre posa en risc els valors naturals i socioeconòmics del delta de lʼEbre?” at 12 noon. It will be coordinated by the professor of Ecology Narcís Prat, with the participation of Carles Ibañez, director of the Aquatic Ecosystems Program of IRTA.

From April 22 to May 30, people will be able to visit the exhibition Exponatura 2016 in the agora of Ramon Margalef Building. It is an exhibition done since 1981 in the Faculty of Biology, which collects pictures and drawings inspired by nature.

Faculty of Philology

On Wednesday 27th, at 7 p.m., the Pati de Lletres of the Historic Building will hold the recital “Envers: III lectura de poetes de la UB”. The activity program of Philology closes with the game ParaUBlari (participation until April 27) and the exhibition “Sigues lingüísticament sostenible” (from April 26 to May 2). The dates of submission of projects for the XXIII Premi Carme Serrallonga. Paisatges lingüístics will be open until April 29.
