The Barcelona Institute of Economics (IEB) of the University of Barcelona (UB) has published the report “Economic Considerations of the Refugee Crisis in Europe”, a new edition of their IEB Report in which they analyse the economic impact of the refugeesʼ arrival which has been going on since 2011, when the Syrian war started. This study includes figures about the impact on the consumer prices, labour market, and the effects of the rental housing in the hosting areas (south eastern Turkish cities).

In one of the report chapters, the researcher of the Central Bank of Turkey, Semih Tumen, gives the figure of 1,2 million as being the total amount of refugees who registered in Turkey from 2011 to 2014. Today, counting the non-registered people, these figures reach the 2,7 million. The impact of their arrival has been especially noticeable in the south eastern cities of the country, such as Kilis, Hatay, Gaziantep, Sanliurfa and Mardin, where the refugees represent more than 10% of the population and in cities such as Kilis, they are a 38% of their population. One of the highlighted consequences in Tumenʼs chapter is the lowering of consumer prices. They estimate a drop effect in the CPI of 2,5% in these hosting cities, both in goods and services.
