This award is an honour to the contribution of the lecturer Elías Campo to the study of origins, evolution and diagnoses of leukaemia. Author of approximately five hundred articles, Campo is one of the most cited Spanish researchers. Regarding assistance, he has been associated to the Clinic Hospital of Barcelona since 1986, and leads the Research Group on human and experimental functional oncomorphology of the August Pi i Sunyer Biomedical Research Institute (IDIBAPS).

The lecturer Campo has led the studies on complete sequencing of the leukaemia genome and epigenome of this disease (chemical changes on the genetic material and its regulating proteins). He also co-directed a scientific project which was a milestone on cancer research in Spain: the genome sequencing of the normal and cancer cells from more than five hundred patients with one of the most common tumours, chronic lymphatic leukaemia (the most common in western countries) with more than a thousand diagnosed patients each year in Spain.

He is currently the elected President of the European Haematology Association and member of the International Governing Cancer Genome Consortium. He is part of the International Lymphoma Study Group. Campo was also honoured with the National Research Award 2013, an institutional award promoted by the Generalitat de Catalunya and Catalan Foundation for Research and Innovation.
