Joaquim Sales Cabré (Barcelona, 1946) has been lecturer since 1986 and Director of the Department of Inorganic Chemistry during the years 1984-1989 and 2001-2004. He started his research on organometallic compounds of transition elements and their applications on homogeneous catalysis at the University of Barcelona. Since the mid-90s he has been interested in the study of the structure-quantitative properties relations (QSPR). He published more than a hundred articles related to this field. Among his contributions in the field of history of Science, a book stands out: La Química a la Universitat de Barcelona (University of Barcelona Publications and Editions, 2011). He has been at the universities of California (Irvine), Florida and Pennsylvania State University.

In the mid-70s, he introduced the new courses “Organometallic Chemistry” and “Reaction Mechanisms” in education, which consolidated the specialization in the area of Inorganic Chemistry.

He also contributed to the normalization of the Catalan language, promoting vocabulary publications as well as Chemistry dictionaries and the Periodic Table. He is co-author of the book “Introducció a la nomenclatura química” and of the translation of “Nomenclatura de Química Inorgànica. Recomanacions de 1990” of IUPAC.

He has been President of the Catalan Society of Physics, Chemical Sciences and Mathematics, and when he was in charge of the society, in 1986, the Sections became the current Societies.
