It has been a week since the failed coup dʼétat in Turkey. Citizenʼs reaction towards the attack stopped the evil popular will stated in the ballot boxes on November 2015. However, this model behaviour occurred due to a series of worrying decisions which were taken by the Turkish government and moved the state of rights and the democracy of the country. The cancellation of the European Convention on Human Rights is the last step, and probably the worst one, which was taken in this situation.

We have recently acknowledged that 15.200 academic professionals and 1.577 deans were fired. We are certainly in front of an unacceptable decision, which is pointing at education. The University of Barcelona condemns this action against universities and their personal, and expresses support to the Turkish university community, in line with the manifesto published by the European University Association (EUA), the Conference of Rectors of the Spanish Universities (CRUE) and the Magna Charta Observatory.

The University of Barcelona understands that the ability, merit and assuming of the democratic values within our institution have to be the only criteria marking the academic career in the University.

Last but not least, the University of Barcelona thinks that when facing a coup, the only possible answer is to stick to the democratic values, such as freedom of expression, association, professorship, tolerance and respect. The University of Barcelona will keep on collaborating with Turkish universities.
