Challenges on dental education in the international field

This summit of international experts will cover debates on the changes on the odontology education model within the new European frame, the impact of new technologies on the academic world, and the leading scientific and technological advances, and the relation between dental education and other fields in the health sciences, among other contents.

According to Professor Cristina Manzanares, “the most important challenge is to add recent advances on dental education, both in the inclusion of new knowledge (biomaterial, genomics and proteomics, advanced clinical knowledge, etc.) and new technologies and methodologies in Odontology, and especially, collaborating with other associations dedicated to the training of professionals of the Health Sciences, such as the Association for Medical Education in Europe, an institution with which, for the first time, will carry a collaborative activity in the conference”.

In the new edition of the conference, there will be the participation of the experts Antonio Nanci, lecturer at the Faculty of Odontology of the University of Montreal and Director of the Laboratory for the Study of Calcified Tissues and Biomaterials, and will be the author of the speech “Controlling the Interfacial Biology between the Gingiva and Tooth/Implant Holds Novel Perspectives to Deal with Periodontal Disease”. With the question “Should a dentist be a scientist?” the lecturer from the University of Geneva Eddie Rodríguez-Carballo, doctorate in Biomedicine at the University of Barcelona in 2013, will talk about the importance of a good academic education with a scientific basis on the expertsʼ résumé. Jacques-Olivier Pers, from the University of Western Brittany and Head of a Research Team on Immunology, Pathology and Immunotherapy, will talk about “The Dentist and systemic autoimmune Pathologies: How to best co-operate”. At the end, the challenges on dental education in Europe will be the focus of the speech “A Closer Examination of Dental Education in Europe”, a proposal by the advisor and expert on higher education Eugene L. Anderson.

The Association for Dental Education in Europe: more than 30 years of history

ADEE, founded in 1975 in Strasbourg (France), is the independent entity with more representativeness regarding European academic odontology. Since its creation, this institution had a major role on the improvement of education, research, and professional development in the fields of dental health and promotion of collaboration between Faculties of Odontology and other teaching and research institutions in Europe. It is chaired by Professor Corrado Paganelli, from the University of Brescia in Italy, and it is a very active institution in European convergence projects on odontology education, which meant a new academic reference frame for the studies of Odontology in the European higher education.

During the last years , ADEE established collaboration links on quality, teaching and research with peer international institutions -such as the American, Japanese and south-east Asia associations- in a line that they want to spread in the future with other institutions from other geographical areas.
