In the 20th edition, Els Juliols had a number of 1.500 students registered. The academic offer of this year had fifty courses from all knowledge fields and part of the success is thanks to this pluridisciplinarity. However, the theme of the most popular courses is very diverse: from politics to neurolinguistics programming, through the women of the 27 generation or the medieval period and the way in which it has been presented and interpreted by current society.

A 68% of the students are women, mostly under the age of 25 and over 55, and the most common reason for their registration is personal interest. A great part of the students are not university students although more than a 38% of them have previous studies.

20 years of activity

To celebrate the twenty years of Els Juliols they threw a party on June 16 in the Historical Building of the University of Barcelona where there were many activities: the broadcast of a special 2-hour radio program Fricandó Matiner, by Vador Lladó; a music performance by the band Doctor Prats, and a castellers (human tower) performance by the Arreplegats de la Zona Universitària, among others.

There was also the presentation of the book Els Juliols de la Universitat de Barcelona. Vint anys dʼhistòria, by several authors, coordinated by Professor Carles Carreras, founder of Els Juliols, with a prologue by the Rector Dídac Ramírez, who noted that Els Juliols are “one of those projects that come here to stay, because they have something special that make them unique and necessary. Sharing knowledge is a human necessity. And wanting to transcend the strict geographic limits and going further. In this context of competitiveness, great universities have in mind that apart from the functions of teaching, research, transfer and innovation, they have a social function too: to be there for society, and people are the society”.

Future expectations

Aiming to continue getting record figures in registration, both in courses and students, the Complementary Training Area of the UB is working on the academic offering for Els Juliols in 2017, getting courses back and looking for new proposals. Suggestions for Els Juliols 2017 can be submitted at the website.
