The Governing Council of the University of Barcelona approved by unanimous vote the changing of name procedure for transsexual and transgender people of the university community.

The legal change of name is predicted in the organic Law 3/2007, March 22, to have effective equality in men and women. The necessary period of time in order to be effective -the medical certification is obtained after two years- creates a paradox between the physical appearance of the person who changes their name and the use of the name, since they can undergo treatment while the name change is not legal yet.

The approved document allows people to use a nickname substituting their names in all activities without legal implications, such as their email, Virtual Campus, UB card or name list in class. This is a way to ensure the protection of the rights for gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and intersexual people in the university community. With this procedure the University of Barcelona expects to promote the participation and representation of this collective in the governing bodies of the institution.

The Rector of the University of Barcelona, Dídac Ramírez, highlighted the importance of the measure, “essential to protect the rights of these collectives and which standardizes their situation”. “With this procedure, the University of Barcelona is making an essential step towards equality”, he said.

Both students of the University of Barcelona and the teaching and administration staff can benefit from this regulation. The procedure for the changing of the name -from its approval onwards- will not exceed three weeks in its totality. The document was promoted from the Vice-Rectorʼs office of Administration and Organization, the Unity of Equality of the University of Barcelona, the Equality Commission of Fine Arts and the teaching staff and students of the center.
