Professors from the Faculty of Economics and Business, Daniel Albalate and Germà Bel, from the research group on Government and Market of the University of Barcelona, have edited the book Evaluating high-speed rail: interdisciplinary perspectives, which aims to be a reference in the study of high-speed rail. The book, published by the British publishing house Routledge, shows the most recent scientific contributions by some of the main worldwide researchers on high-speed. There are contributions by twenty researchers from several countries (Italy, France, Denmark, Israel, Belgium, United Kingdom and Spain) and they touch on relevant topics such as the socioeconomic assessment of the investments in these means of transport, and their contribution to economy, tourism, intermodal competencies, territory and the environment.

Among other ideas, the book touches on the need of an economic assessment of the high-speed rail projects in order to prevent them from being a burden to current and future generations; it is confirmed that in this field the policies have been a mistake in Spain; it also analyses the lack of connectivity between airports and high-speed rail system in several European countries, so the potential of this transport is limited. The objective of the study is to go further on several questions that are usually the focus of debates but on which scientific evidence is still limited. The given evidence in the book should be useful to have a more detailed debate allowing to distinguish between myths and realities of the high-speed rail system contribution.

With this book, and after the previous publication of scientific articles and the book The Economics and Politics of High-Speed Rail. Lessons from Experiences Abroad, published by the American publishing house Lexington Group in 2012, the researchers of the research group on Government and Markets consolidate the University of Barcelona as a center of international reference in the high-speed rail assessment.
