The Jean Monnet Chair of Private European Law of the Faculty of Law will teach the new postgraduate studies on private European law next January. The degree, pioneer in Spain, results from the growing impact that European regulation has in fields that affect citizenship, such as abusive clauses, legal guarantees in merchanting, e-content contracts or unfair commercial practices. According to the directors of the course, “in a moment when EU seems to be in crisis, the analysis and deep knowledge of European law and its advantages for the citizens are more necessary than ever”.

The European directives and jurisprudence, for example, are very important in topics such as abusive clauses and mortgage investments. If the knowledge of private European law creates optional subjects in the bachelor degrees of law and in seminars, the new postgraduate degree will offer training to people who are not in touch with it or need to be up to date with this knowledge.
The studies, directed by the professors Esther Arroyo and Laura Huici, will include modules on competition law, or European contract law, among other subjects, apart from a workshop on the analysis of applied law.
The objective of the Jean Monnet chair is to promote education, research and dissemination of the private European law, both in the University of Barcelona and in other universities, with a face-to-face learning methodology or online studies. The EU program Jean Monnet, on which there are chairs with the same name in several countries, aims to promote the excellence on learning and research of the European Union.
