Maria Cabrera i Callís, adjunct lecturer at the Department of Catalan Philology and General Linguistics of the University of Barcelona, won the 58th Carles Riba Poetry Prize for the book La ciutat cansada. The award was given during the celebration of Festa de les Lletres Catalanes (Catalan arts festival) of Nit de Santa Llúcia, on Friday December 6. The Carles Riba Prize, given by Edicions Proa with the support from Fundació Enciclopèdia Catalana, is the most prestigious award of Catalan poetry given to an unpublished work, which receives 3.000 euros.

The author, born in Girona in 1983, has received this distinction thirteen years after her debut with Jonàs (2003), with which she won the Amadeu Oller Award for young unpublished authors. La ciutat cansada is her third book, “the journal of a dramatic and dark ruining” according to her own words. The awarded book contains poetical prose, and the free verse predominates among the poems.

As a linguist, Maria Cabrera mainly focused on the fields of dialectology and speech analysis. She is member of the Study Group for Variation, Study Group for Dialectal Variation and Group on Teaching Innovation on Catalan Phonetics (FONCAT13) of the University of Barcelona.
