Last Thursday in the Historical building of the University of Barcelona, around seventy North American students attended a conference by the journalist Sílvia Cóppulo, a conference about the role of the Catalan public media in the structure of an own communicative space and through the historic evolution of TV3 and Catalunya Ràdio from her own professional experience.

The speech is done within the California and Illinois universitiesʼ program (UCEAP-UIUC) in the UB, a project which has more than four decades of existence and was the first with these characteristics ever created in Barcelona. Every year, around seventy students from the two American universities study at the University of Barcelona for an academic year. The seminars in which the students participate are related to intercultural communication, social and politic history, linguistic contact, contemporary art, Barcelona and its cultural context, Spanish cinema and Don Quixote, among other topics. The students also participate actively in Catalan language courses, and several cultural activities, organized by this program.

Sílvia Cóppulo, Doctor of Communication at Ramon Llull University and graduated in Psychology at the University of Barcelona, is now directing and presenting the radio program La vida de Catalunya Ràdio, and is an adjunct lecturer in the Communication and the Culture Industry bachelor degree in the University of Barcelona. She started her professional career when she was 19 while she still studied at university. In 1983 she started working in Ràdio Sabadell and a year later she entered Catalunya Ràdio, where she interviewed politicians in the program Fil directe, and her debut in television was during the first broadcasts of Televisió de Catalunya. She has been awarded with several honours and prizes, among which there are the Omnium Award for communication in 2006 for her current affairs debate at TCE-Catalunya Amb ulls de dona (2004-2007); the award Bones Pràctiques de Comunicació No Sexista (Good Practises of non-Sexist Communication) in 2013, which is given by the Women Journalist Association of Catalonia, and the Premi Mitjà de Comunicació (Communication Media Award) of Fem.talent in 2014, for her promotion of equal opportunities among men and women.
