The School of Cinema and Audiovisuals of Catalonia (ESCAC), affiliated to the University of Barcelona, presented the results of the first edition of their Masterʼs degree in Cinematography on June 21. Six films that are the product of a new education and production model driven by the School.

In 2014 ESCAC launched this Master, the only one in Spain with official certificate of the University of Barcelona. It was a project decided by the centre to elaborate six films made by 36 students. Hence the name of the project “One master, six films”.

The titles from the first edition of the master are: La otra casa by Ignacio Tatay; Para no desaparecer by Josecho de Linares; Mi querida cofradía by Marta Díaz de Lope Díaz¸ Salvación by Denise Castro; Blue Rai by Pedro B. Abreu, and The girl from the song by Ibai Abad. All of them have director, production director, photography and stage director, formats in the master and they involve topics ranging from comedy to thriller or terror and drama.

The films were made by 36 students, selected out of 200, all of them graduated in ESCAC -although it was not a requirement- and from different disciplines, that have been working in different projects during two years. The result was a surprise: “we were convinced that one, two or three films would be left out. And all six are good” said the Director of the School, Sergi Casamitjana, in the presentation.

The six films are now in different production stages and there is the will to release them in the two coming years. They have been funded with the School means, but each one with a different fund model according to the needs of the project: from titles requiring traditional ways, to others that went for innovative funding systems. Thus, there are films that are co-productions with the participation of public administrations, TV channels, platforms of video on demand (VOD), and others that have international sale agents.

During the presentation, held in the headquarters of the Moritz Factory in Barcelona, Casamitjana said this master will have a second edition in 2018, with a new selection of 36 students to produce new films.
