Last December 13, the Faculty of Philology opened the remodeled room 111 which is now named after the poet Joan Maragall.

“Philology is the Faculty of the word, praised by Joan Maragall” says Adolfo Sotelo, Dean of the Faculty. An essential figure in the poetry of the modernist movement during the transition from the 19th to the 20th century, Maragall studied Law at the University of Barcelona (when lessons where taught at the Historical Building) and, ending his life, wanted to enroll again to study Classics. The Faculty highlights his political commitment and his journalist side, an activity not very far from this Faculty, since it teaches the bachelor degree in Communication the Culture Industry.

The new room Joan Maragall brings a new and more modern space to the Faculty, updated to the new times. The remodeling has respected the original structure and there have been some significant improvements. Furniture has been changed as well as electrical systems, conditioned air, and there is a complete audiovisual service now. All the process has been supervised by Esperança Borrell, Professor from the Department of Greek, Latin, Romance Languages and Semitic Languages.

The opening ceremony was chaired by the Dean of the Faculty, Adolfo Sotelo; the acting Vice-Rector of Institutional Relations and Culture, Lourdes Cirlot; and the Journalist and Founder-Director of the master degree in Journalism BCN_NY, Josep Cuní. There was the participation of the Professor from the Department of Catalan Philology and General Linguistics, Glòria Casals. Among the attendants, there was the elected rector, Joan Elias, and some members of the Maragall family.
