Joan Rodés, emeritus professor of the University of Barcelona and prestigious hepatologist at the Hospital Clínic de Barcelona, a center he directed and where he created the Hepatology Unit in 1968, died today aged 87.

Dr. Joan Rodés had a long and productive career which gave him a great international recognition. His name is obviously linked to Hospital Clínic, where he was medical director (1984-1986), research director (1997-2003) and CEO (2003-2008). His knowledge and dedication were key elements in this country to promote the treatment of liver diseases and uses of the clinical research in patientsʼ assistance. In 1993 he set the August Pi i Sunyer Biomedical Research Institute (IDIBAPS), which he directed between 1993 and 2008.

Although he received lots of honors and distinctions -Saint Georgeʼs Cross (2001), National Research Prize (2006) or Gold Medal of the Generalitat de Catalunya (2015) among others- there are other rewards he claimed to have during a life fully dedicated to medicine, which, in the 2011 interview with the magazine La Universitat, described as “the most stimulating of all life sciences”.
