The rector of the University of Barcelona, Joan Elias, takes part in the annual conference of rectors of the Ibero-American Universities Union (UIU), which takes place in the Complutense University of Madrid within the framework of the International Conference of Supreme and Constitutional Courts of Latin America, one of the first academic activities of the UIU. From May 17 to 19, this conference series will gather magistrates from the Spanish Constitutional Court and Supreme Court and ministers from the Supreme Courts of Mexico, Argentina and Brazil, together with lecturers of Law from the Complutense University of Madrid (UCM), University of Barcelona (UB), the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), University of Buenos Aires (UBA) and the University of São Paulo (USP), aiming to assess the protection of social rights during the crisis.

The event counts with the attendance of the President of the Constitutional Court, Juan José González Rivas, and the President of the Supreme Court, Carlos Lesmes; the President of the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation (Mexico), Luis María Aguilar; the President of the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation (Argentina), Ricardo Luis Lorenzetti, and the President of the Supreme Federal Court of Brazil, Cármen Lúcia.

This international conference provides a unique opportunity to reflect and revise, from the academic and legal side, the keys to develop political and legal efficient initiatives and consolidate social rights in situations of socioeconomic crises. In these lines, apart from taking part in the annual conference of rectors, the rector of the UB Joan Elias participates in a roundtable on “the University as a guarantor of social rights”. Also, the conference counts with the lectures by Juli Ponce, Jordi Bonet, Ignacio García Ninet and Luis Alonso, lecturers from the Faculty of Law of the UB, whose dean, Xavier Pons, will also participate in the event.

This conference is part of the international academic activities of the Ibero-American University Union during its first year of existence. The UIU, which counts with the support of Santander Bank, is a big Atlantic alliance set in June 2016 between the following universities: National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), University of Buenos Aires (UBA) in Argentina; University of Sao Paulo (USP) in Brazil; the University of Barcelona (UB) and the Complutense University of Madrid (UCM) in Spain. It is a nucleus of high scientific quality institutions promoting the recognition of its researchers, lecturers and students, as well as the exchange of students and teachers, joint research and educational projects and the development of shared theses and studies for simultaneous degrees. Another of its aims is the development of the Latin American culture in the world organizing seminars, colloquiums and scientific conferences.
