The University of Barcelona is the leading institution among the Spanish universities in the distinguished rankings of 2016, according to the new report “Análisis del posicionamiento de las universidades españolas en rankings 2016 nacionales e internacionales” (Analysis of Spanish universitiesʼ positioning in the 2016 national and international rankings), published in June by the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECYT) - Ministry of Economy, Industry and Competitiveness.

The University of Barcelona is the leading institution among the Spanish universities in the distinguished rankings of 2016, according to the new report “Análisis del posicionamiento de las universidades españolas en rankings 2016 nacionales e internacionales” (Analysis of Spanish universitiesʼ positioning in the 2016 national and international rankings), published in June by the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECYT) - Ministry of Economy, Industry and Competitiveness.

 

According to the new analysis of the situation of universities in Spain, “among all universities, the University of Barcelona outstands as the best listed Spanish institutions in the selected rankings, holding the first position among Spanish universities in four of these rankings: Shanghai ranking, QS, SCImago and Reutersʼ”.

The new report provides details about the positioning of the Spanish universities according to the results obtained in eight 2016 national and international rankings: the Academic Ranking of World Universities (Shanghai ranking or ARWU), Scimago Institutions Rankings (SIR), Nature Index, Webometricsʼ Ranking Web of Universities, El Mundo (newspaper) ranking “50 carreras”, and U-Ranking of Spanish Universities. These rankings are based on different indicators, assessing scientific production, teaching quality, academic performance, international outreach, innovation or the centerʼs integration to society, among others.

According to the new report by FECYT, the University of Barcelona leads the TOP 10 regarding the best positioned institutions at a State level, followed by Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona  (UAB), Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (UAM), Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC), the Complutense University of Madrid (UCM), the Polytechnic University of Valencia (UPV), University of Valencia (UV), University of Granada (UGR), Pompeu Fabra University (UPF) and University of Santiago de Compostela (USC).

Out of the seventeen universities that make up the different TOP 10 in the eight analyzed rankings, the report highlights seven institutions that stand above the average value, and these are the UB, UAB, UAM, UPC, UCM, UPV and UV. In particular, the UB and UAB outstand as the only universities represented in the eight rankings the report covers.
